Everybody has a story. As humans living in communities, we
experience not only our stories but those of others. My work is my
own exploration of the human condition and the conflicts that
emerge as we struggle to coexist. I have had the opportunity to live
in different countries such as Colombia, Italy and The United States.
My journeys have left me curious about the psychological state of
the individual in the modern world. Having the opportunity to travel,
I have developed an interest in cultural history, behaviors and life
styles and their effect on the individual.
I left my native country Colombia when I was 17 years old. I had just
graduated High School and I decided to live with my father who
was already living in the USA. For many years I could not go back
home to visit my family and as a teenager, I found this separation
especially difficult. All of these cross-cultural factors -- the emotional
closeness yet distance from my family, as well as the political,
economic and social problems constantly present in my native
country -- inform my work and are part of the narratives that I
present.
I use printmaking to convey my message because it allows me to
offer my audience an unrefined surface that shows not only every
great detail, but also the imperfections, and the uncontrollable and
sometimes unpredictable results. Strong blacks and whites in my
prints, serve as a way to convey feelings of crudeness relying on the
basic contrast of value and line quality.
